Nationwide — The best way to start 2026 is with a First Day Hike in one of America’s state parks.
On January 1, 2026, state parks across the country will host free guided and self-guided First Day Hikes to welcome the new year and celebrate the nation’s semiquincentennial — the 250th anniversary of the United States.
The tradition began in Massachusetts in 1992 and expanded nationwide in 2012 through America’s State Parks. Events range from easy walks and snowshoe treks to more adventurous options, offering visitors of all ages and abilities a chance to experience the quiet beauty of winter landscapes, connect with nature, and begin the year on a healthy, active note.
In Iowa, over 40 parks participate, including Mines of Spain State Recreation Area in Dubuque, which offers a guided hike starting at noon from the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center, followed by refreshments.
Participating parks in nearly every state will offer programs. Visitors can find events near them using the interactive national map at https://www.stateparks.org/special-programs/first-day-hikes/.

Whether you join a guided group or explore a recommended trail on your own, First Day Hikes provide the perfect opportunity to get outside, enjoy fresh air, and share the experience with family and friends.
