DES MOINES, Iowa – Mid-December 2025 brings a welcome snow blanket across Iowa, with forecasts predicting sub-10-degree highs this weekend. For snowmobilers, it’s a thrilling revival after lean years.
“Clubs are grooming trails now,” reports Jessica Flatt, Iowa DNR State Parks Bureau, overseeing the snowmobile program. “Early snow and cold bode well for riding.”
Safety tops the agenda for returning riders: Skip alcohol and drugs, stick to trails, ride sensibly, and bundle up with helmets against the Alberta clipper chill.
“Monitor weather, never solo ride, share your plans,” Flatt advises. Avoid uncharted frozen waters.
Iowa mandates its Snowmobile Education Course for ages 12-17; under-16s need adult supervision. The $34.95 online course (www.iowadnr.gov/things-do/snowmobiling) funds the program—$5 per fee—and suits adults for reciprocity elsewhere.
Most action unfolds on volunteer-groomed trails by Iowa State Snowmobile Association clubs (www.iowasnowmobiler.com). DNR aids with signs; check http://www.iowadnr.gov/stateparks for park rules, though public groomed trails are scarce.
Public-land riders must register via county recorders; fees grant club trails. Winter’s back—ride safe.
