QThe suspects are going around with a homemade flyer, saying they’re raising money for a family member who was shot. The story changes, sometimes it’s medical bills, other times they say it’s for funeral expenses. This story could easily change to any type of catastrophic event that they “need” money for. They’re asking people to donate through a tap-to-pay device. The problem is, they end up charging more than what the person agreed to donate and potentially have access to bank accounts.
Please be cautious of unsolicited requests for donations on the street or public places. Don’t feel pressured by someone approaching you on the street and do not provide your credit or debit card to unknown individuals. If you want to give to a cause, make sure it’s through a trusted charity or local organization.
If you see this happening, or if it already happened to you, please call the Dubuque Police Department’s non-emergency line at 563-589-4415.
Sharing this post will help spread the word and hopefully prevent someone else from being taken advantage of.
