Dubuque, Iowa – A family of five narrowly escaped injury late Thursday evening when a kitchen fire erupted in their home on Edith Street, causing extensive damage and forcing them to seek temporary lodging with assistance from the American Red Cross.

The Dubuque Fire Department responded to a 911 call at 9:57 p.m. on September 25, 2025, from an occupant reporting an oven fire at 655 Edith Street. Dispatchers sent units just 96 seconds later, with Engine 3 arriving on the scene within four minutes to find smoke billowing from the roof’s peak. Firefighters quickly declared a working fire and upgraded the response to a full alarm, bringing the total number of personnel to 19.

As crews from Engine 3 began their initial assessment, the blaze flashed over, shattering windows in the kitchen and living room. Engines 3 and 6 deployed two charged hose lines, stretching them to the left side and rear of the structure for an aggressive attack. Firefighters entered through the front and rear doors, extinguishing the flames on the first floor within five minutes. Heavy smoke throughout the main floor, basement, and attic required ventilation using fans to clear the residence.

Investigators determined the fire was accidental, sparked by unattended cooking oil heating on the stovetop. The home was deemed uninhabitable, with estimated property losses totaling $60,000. Three children and two adults safely evacuated, passing directly by the fire during their escape. The property owner, who was at work at the time, was notified and rushed to the scene to check on her family.

The Red Cross provided on-site support, arranging lodging for the displaced residents that evening. Fire crews remained at the location for approximately 2.5 hours, conducting overhaul operations and securing the property while assisting the occupants.

The Dubuque Police Department aided firefighters at the scene. No injuries were reported among residents or responders.
