This high-visibility enforcement initiative, supported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), aims to ensure safer roads during the busy end-of-summer travel period.
According to a press release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the campaign involves increased patrols by state, county, and city law enforcement across Iowa. The focus is on identifying and removing impaired drivers, including those operating cars and motorcycles. The effort targets the prevention of traffic fatalities, particularly during the “100 Deadliest Days” between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when crashes often spike.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety emphasizes that impaired driving is preventable and urges the public to make responsible choices. “Plan ahead if you’re going to consume alcohol or substances that could impair your ability to drive,” the press release states. Recommendations include designating a sober driver, using rideshare services, or contacting local sober ride programs.
