MAQUOKETA, Iowa – July 6, 2025 – A tragic head-on collision on Hurstville Road, just north of Maquoketa, resulted in one fatality and one injury on July 4, 2025, according to a report from the Iowa State Patrol. The crash, which occurred at approximately 4:30 p.m., involved a 2007 Chrysler PT Cruiser and a 2024 Nissan Pathfinder.

The Iowa State Patrol reported that the Chrysler PT Cruiser, traveling northbound on Hurstville Road, crossed the center dividing line for reasons yet to be determined and collided head-on with the southbound Nissan Pathfinder. The impact was severe, leading to one fatality and one serious injury.

The deceased, whose identity is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed that the lack of seatbelt use contributed to the fatal outcome. The individual was transported to Jackson County Regional Health Center by Jackson County Ambulance, where they were pronounced deceased.

The driver of the Nissan Pathfinder, also unidentified at this time, sustained serious injuries but was wearing a seatbelt, which authorities credit with saving their life. The injured driver was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for treatment.

Both vehicles were significantly damaged and were towed from the scene by B&G Towing. The crash prompted a coordinated response from multiple agencies, including the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, Maquoketa Fire Department, Jackson County Ambulance, and the Jackson County Medical Examiner. Iowa State Patrol Sergeant Helton, badge #118 from Post 12, led the investigation.

Authorities have not released further details about the cause of the crash, including whether road conditions, driver impairment, or mechanical issues played a role.
