Platteville, WI – May 20, 2025

UW-Police responded to a shooting at Wilgus Hall, where they found Kelsie Martin and Helms, both 22, with gunshot wounds. Martin was transported to Southwest Health and later airlifted to UW Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A preliminary autopsy determined Helms died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities are investigating the incident, and no further details have been released.


Platteville, Wisconsin . — The University of Wisconsin Wisconsin-Platteville community is mourning the loss of two students, Kelsie Martin, 22, of Beloit, Wisconsin, and Hallie Helms, 22, of Baraboo, Wisconsin, following a tragic incident at Welgus Hall.

Chancellor Tammy Evetovich informed the campus community via email on Monday night, stating that the deaths were a result of a targeted and isolated incident between the two students.

The news has left students, faculty, and staff in deep sorrow as they grapple with the sudden loss of two young lives. ‘our hearts go out to the families, friends, and loved ones of Kelsie and Hallie. The specifics surrounding the incident are scarce, as investigators continue their examination.

The university has provided assurance to the campus community that there is currently no ongoing threat, highlighting the isolated nature of the incident.
