On the afternoon of April 4th, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Highway 80 and Highway 11 in the Township of Hazel Green. The incident was reported at approximately 3:19 p.m., with one of the vehicles involved fleeing the scene.
Upon arriving at the site, deputies identified Jacqueline and William Stephanopolous as occupants of a 2011 Nissan Titan, which had been traveling northbound. The Nissan was struck on the passenger side by a silver 2013 Ford Fusion, whose driver had attempted a U-turn before fleeing the area. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Through investigative efforts, authorities determined the fleeing driver to be Richard Smith, 35, of Hanover, Illinois. Smith was cited for failure to yield the right of way and operating without insurance. Charges for hit-and-run are being referred to the Grant County District Attorney for further action.
Terry’s Tire and Towing assisted with the incident.
All individuals arrested or referred for charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
