The Grant County Sheriff’s Office has issued a urgent warning to residents following a surge in reported fraud attempts targeting families. Scammers are impersonating distressed relatives—claiming emergencies like accidents, illnesses, or arrests—to extort cash, with at least one victim already suffering financial loss.

According to the Grant County Communications Center, an escalating number of calls have been logged from residents targeted by fraudsters posing as family members. The scammers fabricate crises, such as a grandchild’s arrest or a child’s medical emergency, demanding immediate cash. Victims are instructed to prepare large sums for pickup at their homes, bypassing traditional payment methods to avoid detection.

Authorities confirmed one case where a scammer successfully collected money from a resident’s doorstep. Sheriff Craig Reuka emphasized the incident remains under investigation, urging the public to exercise extreme caution. “These criminals exploit emotional vulnerability,” he stated. “We urge everyone to verify claims before acting.”

Sheriff Reuka highlighted the scammers’ use of urgency—pressuring victims not to consult others—as a red flag. He advised residents to:

1. Verify Independently: Contact the alleged family member or another trusted person using known phone numbers.
2. Resist Pressure: Legitimate emergencies allow time for confirmation.
3. Report Suspicious Activity: Immediately alert law enforcement to suspicious calls or visits.
