Dangerous Cold and Winter Storms Threaten Midwest Through Next Week

QUAD CITIES, IA/IL — The National Weather Service (NWS) Quad Cities office issued a stark Hazardous Weather Outlook early Thursday, February 13, 2025, warning residents across Iowa, Illinois, and northeast Missouri to brace for a prolonged stretch of life-threatening cold and multiple winter storms.

Immediate Threat: Subzero Wind Chills

A frigid air mass has settled over the region, with temperatures plunging to single digits above and below zero Thursday morning. Northwest winds of 10–15 mph are driving wind chills as low as -15°F west of the Mississippi River. The cold will intensify overnight, with wind chills dropping to -10°F to -20°F north of Interstate 80 and slightly “warmer” (but still dangerous) lows of -5°F to -10°F south of the interstate by Friday morning.

“This is not just uncomfortable—it’s dangerous,” the NWS emphasized, urging residents to limit outdoor exposure, layer clothing, and check on vulnerable neighbors. Frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes in these conditions.

Weekend Storm: Snow and Wintry Mix

A second weather system will arrive Friday night, lasting through Saturday. Areas north of a Fairfield, Iowa, to Galesburg, Illinois, line could see accumulating snow, while communities south of that boundary face a wintry mix of sleet and freezing rain. Though exact totals remain uncertain, the storm may disrupt travel and cause slick roads.

Temperatures will plummet again Saturday and Sunday nights, with wind chills forecast to hit -10°F to -20°F, coldest north of I-80.

Next Week: Another Snow Threat

A third storm system is expected to impact the region Monday into Tuesday, bringing another round of potential accumulating snow. The NWS advised residents to monitor updates, as this system could exacerbate existing challenges.

Affected Areas

The advisory spans over 30 counties, including major regions like Dubuque, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Rock Island, and Quincy, as well as rural communities in Iowa’s Benton, Johnson, and Muscatine counties, Illinois’ Jo Daviess and McDonough counties, and northeast Missouri.

Local officials are urging precautions:

• Avoid unnecessary travel, especially during storms.
• Keep emergency kits stocked with blankets, food, and flashlights.
