DUBUQUE, IA — A 34-year-old local man was arrested last week on multiple felony charges, including drug violations and illegal weapon possession, according to Dubuque law enforcement.

Cornelius Gary Larthell Mitchell-Peterson, a male, was taken into custody at approximately 5:59 p.m. on February 9, 2025, near the intersection of West 16th Street and Main Street. Authorities reported finding controlled substances and a weapon during the arrest.

Mitchell-Peterson faces six charges: three felony counts of Controlled Substance Violation, one misdemeanor count of Possession of a Controlled Substance (Marijuana, first offense), a misdemeanor charge for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and an additional felony charge for being a person legally prohibited from carrying dangerous weapons. The latter charge suggests a prior criminal history restricting his access to firearms or other weapons.

Under Iowa law, first-offense marijuana possession is typically a misdemeanor, while repeated or severe drug violations can escalate to felonies. The weapons charge underscores heightened scrutiny over illegal firearm possession amid statewide efforts to curb violence.

Mitchell-Peterson is currently held at the Dubuque County Jail pending arraignment. Court dates and bond information have not yet been released.
