On December 20, 2024, at around 7:10 a.m., Andrew McQuirk, a 37-year-old resident of Boscobel, was driving a Town and Country Sanitation garbage truck southbound on Highway 61 near the intersection of Hy-Point Road in North Lancaster Township. The road was covered in snow and icy, making it difficult for McQuirk to control the truck. As McQuirk approached Hy-Point Road, a Lancaster School bus was stopped at the intersection to pick up a student. The bus had its emergency lights and stop sign activated. McQuirk attempted to brake, but the slippery road conditions prevented it. Consequently, the garbage truck slid into the back of the school bus, which was carrying four students at the time.

Lancaster EMS promptly responded to the scene and transported one student to Grant Regional Health Center for minor injuries. Thankfully, no other injuries were reported.

After the incident, McQuirk was cited for failure to maintain control of the vehicle, and both vehicles were safely removed from the scene.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office, along with Lancaster EMS and the Wisconsin State Patrol, assisted in the investigation and response.
