SCAM ALERT—- Recently our area has encountered a new scam, referred to as a “courier scam”. For this scam, the offender reaches out to a victim and convinces them of an issue with their accounts at their respective financial institution. These offenders then offer to help them secure their money. The offender urges the victim to withdraw cash from their bank and advises the victim should not discuss the situation with the teller due to the financial institution being “in on it”. The scammer then has a courier personally meet with the victim to collect the cash. If you recall, this is a similar situation that resulted in an Uber driver being shot and killed a few months back in Ohio.

Just a reminder that when you receive random calls, texts or emails from people, try to verify the source and consider what you know about the way our systems work. Banks have been around a long time and have been a pretty solid option for storing money. If there is misappropriation within the institution with your accounts, there is a high likelihood the bank will make you whole, particularly if their employees are responsible for the loss. Here is a link to an FBI site that highlights what to watch for with these types of scams: https://www.ic3.gov/Media/Y2024/PSA240129

Thanks, and stay safe!
