The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was alerted about a single vehicle accident at the Highway 35/81/81 roundabout in South Lancaster Township.
Randall Eilderts, 62, from Ackley, Iowa, who owns R.D Eilderts Trucking, was driving a Freightliner Semi truck with an empty grain trailer southbound on Highway 61. He was not familiar with the area and due to heavy rain, could not see the roundabout when approaching from the north. Eilderts tried to slow down as he realized the roundabout was ahead, but was unsuccessful. His truck hit the curb, causing it to briefly become partially airborne. The truck then collided with the center grass mound of the roundabout, jackknifed to the west, went over an embankment, and hit a light pole before coming to a stop.
Despite the crash, Eilderts was unharmed, and his truck suffered moderate damage.
The Lancaster Fire Department and B&M Auto, Tire, and Towing of Bloomington assisted the Grant County Sheriff’s Office at the scene.
