On November 11, at 5pm, a University of Iowa student and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated., Wiam Elkhalifa, found herself in a tragic car accident. Wiam, along with her friends, was traveling on the highways of Dubuque, Iowa when they struck a wheelbarrow sitting in the middle of the road.
Out of instinct, Wiam and her friends pulled over to the shoulder to assess the damages to their vehicle. While taking photographs of the car, tragedy struck again as Wiam and another passenger were struck by a passing driver.
The impact of the accident was devastating, instantly killing Wiam’s friend and leaving her in critical condition. Wiam sustained numerous injuries, including broken ribs, a pneumothorax, a broken leg, maxillofacial trauma, a broken jaw, and internal bleeding.
Wiam’s injuries were so severe that she will now undergo a series of surgeries, each with their own associated costs. In addition to these surgeries, Wiam will require extensive outpatient care and physical therapy to aid in her recovery.
Unfortunately, Wiam’s financial burden has grown even greater. As a student attending college full-time and working two jobs, she is already struggling to meet her basic needs. Now, with the medical expenses piling up, Wiam’s family is left facing an overwhelming financial burden.
Recognizing the challenges Wiam and her family are facing, her friends and I are determined to help. Together, we want to raise as much money as possible to support Wiam’s medical expenses, allowing her to focus on her recovery without the added stress of financial burdens.
