On September 30, 2023 at 9:58 AM the Grant County Sheriff’s Office received a call of a suspicious vehicle parked along Cty B near Stanton Rd, on the shoulder, opposite side of the road. The caller reported that it looked like the vehicle had struck a deer and there was no one around. According to the deputy investigating the case, the vehicle struck a deer at the intersection, continued westbound, crossed the center line, turned south, and struck a utility pole with its driver’s side front corner.
The deputy contacted the registered owner of the car who admitted he had gone to work at about 6:30 AM, driving about 65 MPH, adjusting his mirrors, when the deer entered the road. His first thought was that he had blown a tire, not seeing the deer. The vehicle left the road, struck the pole, and then came to rest on the road surface. A passerby helped the driver push the vehicle onto the side of the road.
The driver was identified as Walter Bates, 28, of Tehachapi, CA. The 2020 Ford EcoSport he was driving sustained disabling damage and had to be towed.
Bates’ driving status was revoked in Wisconsin and he was cited for Operating After Revocation.
