The Dubuque Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call on Tuesday, September 5th, 2023, 4:23 PM from a tenant on the second floor of a multifamily residence in the 300 block of West 17th reporting a fire on the porch. The Dubuque Fire Department was dispatched to the scene at 4:24PM. Initial responding vehicles included Command 528, Engine 501, Ladder 511, Medic 551, Engine 503, Engine 506, and Truck 512. The response brought 16 firefighters in total to the response.
The first unit, Command 528, arrived at scene within 3 minutes of dispatch, established command, conducted a size up with smoke showing from the rear of the structure and directed the initial companies to stretch a fire attack line into the building. Initial fire crews entered the structure and reported smoke on the second floor, with fire on the rear porch. Crews extinguished the fire within 5 minutes of arrival. Supporting crews conducted a primary search of the building. All residents had evacuated and were accounted for. Crews worked to clear the building of smoke and confirmed no further extension within the building. The fire was determined to be accidental in nature, discarded smoking materials. The building was determined to be habitable, and all occupants were able to return to their units.

The Dubuque Fire Department was assisted on the scene by the Dubuque Police Department and the Department of Housing and Community Development. There were no injuries to responders reported, 1 civilian sustained a non-life-threatening injury which was treated at the scene.
