Dubuque Police Chief Jermey Jensen attended the city council meeting last evening to seek approval for an automated camera system designed to read license plates.

During the discussion, Councilman Ric Jones expressed his support for the system, emphasizing the urgent need for its implementation. He highlighted the importance of apprehending criminals quickly and pointed out that the system could a vital role in saving lives and recovering stolen vehicles. Councilman Jones strongly believes that this automated camera system will significantly enhance law enforcement efforts in Dubuque.

Council Member Susan R. Farber pointed out that the information stored by cameras in government databases is deleted every thirty days. Unlike face recognition, these cameras utilize symbol recognition to gather data that already exist,and was in favor of the system.

Councilman David Resnick, on the other hand, expressed concern about the privacy implications for citizens and the duration for which plate numbers are stored. This raises important questions regarding the balance between public safety and personal privacy. In light of these concerns, it is crucial for policymakers to carefully evaluate the storage policies and implement appropriate safeguards to protect the rights of individuals while maintaining effective surveillance systems.

The council voted 6 to 1 in favor on the use of the system and awarding the contract to To Flock Safety.

The only no vote was by Councilman Resnick.
