The Iowa House passed HF 73. It calls for age-appropriate gun safety courses in public schools. The National Rifle Association will provide the materials for the courses.

Classes would be non-compulsory in kindergarten through sixth grades, but if the bill becomes law Iowa public schools would have to offer or make gun safety courses available for seventh through 12th graders. Instructors would not have to be licensed teachers.

Senate approval is needed for the firearm proposals in the House bill to go to the governor.
