On April 8th, 1973, Dubuque was buried by 19.2 inches of snow, in one of the worst spring snow storms on record. The storm lasted over a three-day period with blizzard conditions with winds as high as 65 mph. Stranding vehicles and paralyzing the city. The weather forecast that day only called for 3 inches of snow.

14 lives were taken by the storm and over 1000 live stock killed during the storm.
