On July 30, 2022 at 2:33 PM the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office Iowa Dispatch Center notified by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office of a train vs. truck crash on Closing Dam Road, in Cassville Township.

Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene and the investigation determined that Lawrence Osterhaus, age 69 of Glen Haven, was attempting to cross the rail-road tracks at 7101 Closing Dam Road, in a 2000 Dodge pickup truck pulling a trailer, when a Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) train was traveling south. As Osterhaus pulled into the rail-road crossing, the BNSF train struck the passenger side of the truck. Osterhaus was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Grant County Coroner’s Office, as a result of the injures sustained in the crash.
No injuries to the BNSF crew were reported.
