DUBUQUE, Iowa — The University of Dubuque will host the annual Take Back the Night event on Thursday, April 9, 2026, from 6:30 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. The free, public gathering raises awareness about sexual violence and supports survivors in the tri-state area.

Keynote speaker is Kat Owensby (University of Dubuque class of 2022), a poet and writing instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. Her spoken-word presentation explores healing, love, community, faith, lineage, and empowerment, focusing on the journey from silence to survivorship.

Event Schedule

•  6:30 p.m.: Resource fair in the lobby of the Peter and Susan Smith Welcome Center, featuring information from local partners on prevention, counseling, health services, and reporting options.

•  7:00 p.m.: Keynote address by Kat Owensby, followed by an open-mic speak-out for survivors and allies to share stories.

•  Conclusion: Candlelight vigil on Grace Plaza, proceeding to the Laube Memorial Bell Tower.

The event is hosted by the University of Dubuque in partnership with Clarke University, Loras College, Northeast Iowa Community College, and Riverview Center.
