Hazel Green, WI — On February 13, 2026, at approximately 6:06 p.m., Grant County dispatch received multiple reports of a black SUV traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of US Highway 151 near Mile Marker 2 at about 30 mph.

Other drivers safely stopped the vehicle on the median. Dubuque Police and a Jo Daviess County deputy stood by until a Grant County sergeant arrived.

The driver, 74-year-old Michael Ede of Dubuque, displayed signs of impairment. He was arrested for third-offense operating while intoxicated (OWI) and cited for operating the wrong way on a divided highway.

Ede was taken to Southwest Health Center for evaluation and later released to a responsible party. No injuries or significant crashes were reported.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Dubuque Police Department, Jo Daviess County Sheriff’s Office, several witnesses, and Biedler Towing of Dubuque.

As with all arrests by the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Ede is presumed innocent until proven guilty in court. An arrest indicates only that probable cause exists for charges. Victim and witness names are withheld per Wisconsin Statute §950.04.

This incident highlights the risks of impaired wrong-way driving on high-speed highways and the critical role of alert motorists in preventing potential head-on collisions.
