Dubuque, IA – January 15, 2026 – Dubuque Police Department issued a warning after a local resident fell victim to a rental scam.

The resident found a house listed for rent online. The supposed landlord demanded payment for a background check before allowing a property viewing. A tour was scheduled, but no one appeared, and all contact ceased. The “landlord” could not be verified.

Tips to Avoid Rental Scams:

•  Never send money before viewing the property.

•  Verify landlords and property managers.

•  Be cautious of listings on social media.

•  Avoid paying with debit cards or electronic transfers.

If scammed, contact your bank immediately and report to law enforcement.
