GRIMES, IA – December 16, 2025 – It takes more energy to keep your home warm and comfortable when the cold weather hits. That’s why Black Hills Energy is sharing simple low-cost and no-cost ways to help customers lower their natural gas use so they can save money this winter heating season. The company is also reminding customers of available resources to help with energy bills.

“The amount of energy you use is the single biggest driver of your energy bill, so we’re providing customers with ideas to help them use less energy each month,” said Sarah Paulsen, Energy Efficiency Program Coordinator. “We also offer energy assistance programs and free payment options to help customers manage energy costs.”

Get started with a free Home Energy Assessment

Try these simple tips to save energy and money

Tips range from easy and inexpensive – like lowering the thermostat by a couple of degrees and closing curtains to keep warm air inside – to do-it-yourself measures, such as using weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows to keep out drafts.

  • When you are home and awake, set the thermostat as high as comfortable on warm days, and as low as is comfortable on cold days. A smart or programmable thermostat can make it easy to set back your temperature.
  • Run complete loads of laundry and dishes to avoid using more hot water and energy than necessary.
  • Skip the drying cycle on your dishwasher. Instead, prop the door open once dishes are washed and allow them to air dry.
