As the 2025 holiday season unfolds, Iowa law enforcement is ramping up efforts to ensure safe travel amid increased traffic.
The Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau (GTSB), in partnership with the Iowa State Patrol and local agencies, has launched a high-visibility enforcement campaign focused on impaired driving. Extra patrols are active through January 1, 2026, aligning with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s initiative.
Additionally, a Special Traffic Enforcement Program (sTEP) began on December 19, 2025, running through January 4, 2026. Officers target distracted driving, speeding, seat belt violations, and impaired driving.
GTSB Bureau Chief Brett Tjepkes emphasizes planning ahead: designate sober drivers or use rideshares. Doll Distributing offers $10 Uber vouchers via the Decide to Ride program.
Impaired driving causes about 37% of Iowa’s fatal crashes. With 2025 fatalities already down significantly, these measures aim to sustain safer roads.
Drivers: Buckle up, stay sober, and drive attentively for a safe holiday season.
