Dubuque, IA – October 28, 2025 – Clarke University’s Board of Trustees announced today that President Fletcher Lamkin has resigned, effective immediately. Lamkin, who assumed the permanent presidency in July 2024 after serving as interim president since January 3, 2023, departs after 16 months in the role and nearly three years with the institution.
A retired U.S. Army Brigadier General and West Point Class of 1964 alumnus, Lamkin brought a wealth of higher education leadership to Clarke. His prior presidencies include two terms at Westminster College in Missouri (2000–2007 and 2017–2020), alongside roles at West Virginia University at Parkersburg and Kansas Wesleyan University. During his tenure, he spearheaded the 2023–2026 strategic plan, launched a new capital campaign, stabilized enrollment, and strengthened the university’s financial position amid post-COVID recovery.
Board Chair Carolyn Haupert declined to specify reasons for the resignation, citing personnel confidentiality, but expressed gratitude for Lamkin’s service. “We thank President Lamkin for his dedication and wish him well,” she said. The university pledged a seamless transition to preserve progress on its mission of education, justice, and community service.
Interim President Named: Dr. Yvonne Zimmerman
Stepping in as interim president is Dr. Yvonne Zimmerman, Vice President for Academic Affairs. Zimmerman, who joined Clarke in 2023 as Dean of the College, holds a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration and has driven academic operations, curriculum innovation, and faculty development. Her background includes leadership in student success and institutional strategy.
“The Board has full confidence in Yvonne’s ability to lead during this transition,” Haupert stated. Zimmerman will collaborate with the Cabinet to advance key priorities while a national search for a permanent president begins—no timeline yet announced.
