South Lancaster Township, WI – On June 28, 2025, at approximately 10:43 AM, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a hit-and-run crash on County Trunk Highway A (CTH A), just east of Hwy 129 in South Lancaster Township. Authorities received reports of a dark-colored SUV striking a bicyclist and fleeing westbound on CTH A at high speed.

Lancaster EMS arrived at the scene to treat the bicyclist, who sustained serious injuries requiring immediate medical attention. Due to the severity of the injuries, Med Flight was dispatched to transport the victim to Grant Regional Health Center, where they were later transferred to UW Hospital for further treatment.

Deputies located parts of the suspect vehicle at the crash site, including a passenger-side mirror. While EMS personnel attended to the victim, deputies initiated a search for a dark-colored SUV with corresponding damage. Shortly after, Grant County Dispatch received a report of a disabled vehicle on CTH E, approximately one mile east of Hwy 61. Deputies responded and found a dark gray 2019 Kia Sorento parked along the road with a flat front passenger tire, damage to the front passenger side, and a missing passenger-side mirror.

The driver, identified as 54-year-old John Goomey of Platteville, showed signs of impairment upon contact with deputies. Following an investigation, Goomey was arrested and booked into the Grant County Jail on charges of Operating While Intoxicated (OWI) Causing Injury and Hit and Run Causing Great Bodily Harm.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Lancaster Police Department, Lancaster Fire Department, Lancaster EMS, and Arrow Towing. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have withheld the victim’s name per Wisconsin Statute §950.04.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that individuals arrested or referred for charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. An arrest indicates probable cause exists to bring formal charges.
