DUBUQUE, IA – Iowa residents are warned of a scam involving fraudulent text messages claiming to be from the Iowa Motor Vehicle Administration (DMV). The messages, sent from an Indiana phone number (+930-698-2104), falsely state that recipients have an outstanding traffic ticket and face penalties, including vehicle registration suspension, a 30-day driver’s license suspension, a 35% service fee, and credit score damage if payment is not made by June 19, 2025. The texts cite a fake Iowa State Administrative Code 15C-16.003 and direct users to a suspicious website (https://iowadot.gov-idi.icu/pay) for payment.
The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) confirms this is a scam. The Iowa DOT does not send unsolicited text messages demanding immediate payment or threatening license suspension via text. The phone number originates from Indiana, not Iowa, and the linked website is not affiliated with the official Iowa DOT website (iowadot.gov). Residents should not click the link, provide personal information, or make payments through the site.
How to Protect Yourself:
• Verify any DMV-related notices directly through the official Iowa DOT website (iowadot.gov) or by contacting your local DMV office.
• Do not click links or reply to unsolicited texts, especially those requesting urgent payment.
• Report suspicious messages to the Iowa Attorney General’s Office or the Federal Trade Commission.
If you’ve received this text or provided information to the scam, contact local authorities immediately. Stay vigilant to avoid falling victim to this fraudulent scheme.
