Dubuque, Iowa – An air quality alert has been issued today, June 12th, due to elevated levels of PM2.5, with the Air Quality Index (AQI) reaching 117, classified as “Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups.” This level of air pollution may cause health effects for individuals with respiratory or heart conditions, the elderly, children, and those with other sensitivities to poor air quality. The general public is not expected to be significantly impacted.

The primary pollutant, PM2.5 (particulate matter smaller than 2.5 microns), is measured at 37.5 µg/m³. These tiny particles, often from smoke, vehicle emissions, or industrial sources, can penetrate deep into the lungs, potentially exacerbating health issues for sensitive groups.

Health officials recommend that sensitive individuals limit prolonged outdoor activities, keep windows closed, and use air purifiers indoors. The alert is expected to remain in effect until air quality improves.
