CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — On May 29, 2025, Daniel Alan Van Gorp, 43, formerly of Arizona, was convicted by a jury in federal court in Cedar Rapids of one count of conspiracy to distribute controlled substances, including fentanyl and methamphetamine. The verdict, reached after a four-day trial and five hours of deliberation, also found that the fentanyl Van Gorp conspired to distribute caused serious bodily injury to a victim in Iowa.

Evidence presented at trial revealed Van Gorp mailed multiple packages containing fentanyl pills, fentanyl powder, and “ice” methamphetamine from Arizona to Alexander Chapman in Dubuque, Iowa. Chapman then redistributed the drugs locally. On May 15, 2023, a victim used fentanyl powder mailed by Van Gorp and suffered serious bodily injury.

Van Gorp faces a mandatory minimum of 20 years in prison and a possible life sentence. He remains in U.S. Marshal custody pending sentencing, which will be scheduled after a presentence report is prepared by United States District Court Chief Judge C.J. Williams.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Nicole L. Nagin and investigated by the Dubuque Drug Task Force, U.S. Postal Inspection, and Phoenix Police Department. Court file information is available at https://ecf.iand.uscourts.gov/cgi-bin/login.pl, case number 24-CR-1003.
