Dubuque, IA – A residential structure fire broke out at 3775 Hillcrest Road in the early hours of Saturday, May 10, 2025. The Dubuque Emergency Communications Center received the first 911 call at 4:52 a.m., prompting a swift response from the Dubuque Fire Department.

Fire units, including Engine 2, Medic 2, Truck 4, Engine 5, Battalion 1, Truck 1, and Engine 3, arrived on the scene within four minutes. Upon arrival, crews declared a working fire and quickly assessed the situation. Firefighters successfully extinguished the blaze on the exterior deck and inside the kitchen and dining areas, preventing further spread into the attic.

According to Division Chief Dave Grass, the fire was deemed accidental, resulting from a discarded cigarette left in an ashtray on the deck the previous night. Despite significant smoke damage, the residence was deemed habitable, although utilities were shut off. The tenant is currently working with the landlord to make arrangements for further repairs.

Estimated damages total $28,000. The Dubuque Police Department assisted the fire department at the scene. No injuries were reported among responders.

The cause of the fire highlights the importance of fire safety and proper disposal of smoking materials. The Dubuque Fire Department’s prompt response and effective firefighting efforts minimized damage and ensured the safety of the occupants.
