A tragic head-on collision on a snow-covered bridge claimed the life of a Cuba City man early Thursday morning, authorities reported. The crash occurred at approximately 7:52 a.m. on County Trunk Highway U near the intersection of Black Jack Road in Waterloo Township, Cassville.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, driven eastbound by 20-year-old Spencer Meyer-Steiger of rural Potosi, collided with a westbound 2013 Honda Accord operated by 54-year-old Craig Hendrickson of Cuba City. The vehicles crashed on the deck of the Grant River bridge, where road conditions were described as “snow covered and slippery” at the time.
The impact caused Hendrickson’s Honda Accord to come to rest on the southeast side of the bridge, while Meyer-Steiger’s Chevrolet Silverado overturned, landing roof-down in the westbound lane. Cassville Fire and EMS, along with Glen Haven First Responders, rushed to the scene. Hendrickson sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by the Grant County Coroner. Meyer-Steiger was evaluated by EMS but did not require hospitalization.
The Wisconsin State Patrol assisted with accident reconstruction, and the crash remains under investigation. County Trunk Highway U was closed between County Trunk Highway N and Black Jack Road for over six hours, reopening around 2:00 p.m.
The Grant County Sheriff’s Office acknowledged support from Cassville EMS, Cassville Fire Department, the Wisconsin State Patrol, and the Grant County Highway Department. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the Sheriff’s Office as the investigation continues.
