Authorities reported that a Dubuque man attempted to use a weapon during his arrest. Kentrell V. Powell, 28, was taken into custody at 10:58 p.m. on Thursday, facing multiple charges such as interference with law enforcement involving a firearm, assault on certain professionals with a weapon, fifth-degree theft, possession of a firearm by a felon, and public intoxication.

Court documents indicate that an officer was dispatched to Casey’s General Store on Peru Road around 10:20 p.m. on Thursday in response to a theft that had escalated into a disturbance. Upon arrival, Powell did not comply with orders to stop and was subsequently detained. The officer noted that Powell exhibited slurred speech and unsteady movements. While handcuffed, Powell leaned back significantly, appearing to reach for something in his waistband. Police body camera footage recorded a sound similar to a handgun’s hammer falling, and officers discovered a gun on Powell.
