Dubuque, Iowa – Randall Heine, a Dubuque man originally charged with attempted murder, has been sentenced to a maximum of 10 years in prison following a plea agreement. The 30-year-old appeared in Dubuque County District Court on Friday, where Judge Michael J Schubatt handed down the sentence. Heine was charged with, burglary in the second degree, domestic abuse assault with a dangerous weapon, use of a dangerous weapon in the commission of a crime, and operating a motor vehicle under the influence, first offense.

As part of the plea agreement, Heine’s attempted murder charge, assault with a dangerous weapon, and displaying or carrying a weapon while intoxicated were dropped. In August, Heine entered into the plea agreement, accepting reduced charges, which ultimately led to his recent sentencing.

During the early morning hours of New Year’s Eve last year. Heine had broken into the home of Zachary Schmitt entering through his garage and threatened him with a loaded gun. In a terrifying turn of events, Heine pulled the trigger, but fortunately, the weapon did not fire. It was during this ordeal that Heine’s wife, Miranda Heine, who was staying with Schmitt, eventually convinced her husband to put the gun down. Heine left the scene but was apprehended by the Dubuque Police
